What do you think Johnny's last words to Pony mean?

Remeber to continue to note the three types of harrassment/bullying, physical, emotional and social.  As you read, mark with post-it notes examples of each type within the novel to bring to the discussion table.  As well note and record how the warfare between the Greasers and the Socs grows.

  1. 1.What the doctor says on pg.119 is "Let them go in, he said to the nurse. He's been asking for them. It can't hurt now." I think that the doctor is talking about how Johnny is dying and wants to see his friends before he dies. I also think this means that Johnny is in critical condition and close to death so the doctor wants to let him have the last minutes of his life with the people he really loves.

2.I think that Darry would be a soc because he is smart and strong. By this I mean that Darry is really smart and can think like a soc, but he is also muscular and good looking. Another thing about Darry that would have made him a soc is that he is strong and togh meaning that he can stick up for himself.

3.I think when Ponyboy said this he means that Johnny is his best friend and that he would not like living without his friendship. Another reason I think he said this is because Johnny is known to be the gangs “pet” and that he is kind of their good luck charm.

4.The boys fight because “you like fights dont you soda?I asked suddenly. Yeah, sure . He shrugged. I like fights. How come? I don’t know. He looked at me puzzled. It’s action. It’s a contest. Like a drag race or a dance or something.” and “How come you like fights, Darry? I asked, looking up at him as he stood behind me, leaning in the kitchen doorway.” In these two quotes that I have writen down are giving the reasons why the other boy’s like to fight. I think that Ponyboy is different because he is smaller then the others and not as big, but also doesn’t really enjoy to fight.

  2. It forshadows Johnny's condition because the doctor thinks he wont last long. He says "he's been asking for them. It can't hurt now".

He would be a Soc because he is smart, has money and is good looking. If he didn't have Pony and Soda I don't see why he couldn't be. But he does so he doesn't want to be.

He means the the gang could not get along together without Johnny. But with Johnny they can because he is like the pet of the gang and he is nervous from the time he got jumped bad.

The boys fight for fun and blow off steam. Pony does not have anything to fight about and never has to blow off steam. Thats why he doesn't really enjoy fighting as much.

The diferance between both gangs is the Tim's gang is going to grow up being hoods. The greasers don't want to end up being hoods when they are older. "Thats the differance between his gangs and ours, they had a leader and were organized; we were just buddies who stuck together, each man was his own leader".

  3. 1. When the doctor says "let them go in, he's been asking for them. It cant hurt now" this statement foreshawdows his condition because it sounds like he is going to die. When the docter says this you think that it doesn't really matter anymore because it doesn't look like he has much hope of living. In the end Johnny does die.

    2. If Darry didin't have Soda and Pony he could be a soc because of his good looks, he's well kept and speaks very well. He was involved in sports in school and he was also a good student.

    3. Ponyboy means that everyone loved Johnny. he was the member of the gang that got along with everyone, never was one to start a fight, everyone wanted to take care of him because of his hardships that he faced everyday at home. He was the one everyone could count on and he cared about people.

    4. The boys fight because they like to fight, they think it's fun and get a great kick out of it but Ponyboy doesn't like to fight at all. He just does to be part of the gang.

    5. Tim Shepherd's gang is different from Ponyboy's gang because their gang had a leader and were organized but Ponyboy's gang was just a group of friends who stuck together and each man was their own leader. Ponyboy feels this gives his group the upper hand because they will look out for each other when the fighting starts and nobody wants to be the ring leader everybody is equal and helps each other.

When Ponyboy makes the comment about what kind of world is this he means that society judges people on the way they look first and they don't give people a chance they judged them first.
Johnny's last words to Ponyboy were "Stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold". I think this means for Ponyboy to stay strong and never give up when things get rough.

  4. Chapters 8/9

How does what the doctor first says, on page 119, forshadow Johhny's condition?

What the doctor first says forshadows Johnny's condition because usally when some says it can't hurt now it means that it's too late nothing is going to change. ""..It can't hurt now."....I thought numbly, he is dying" There was no way of saving Johnny it was a matter of time until he would be gone. Nothing could change about what condition he was in. Heearing those four would drive a steak through youyr heart just knowing that things were so bad that nothing could do anything to change it.

If Darry didn't have Soda and Pony, why would he be a soc?

Darry would be a Socs if it hadn't been for Soda and Pony because he was too smart to be a greaser. If it hadn't been for those two and the gang he would be out with the Socs not worring about having to get a job and been able to finish school. ""In spite of not having much money, the only reason Darry couldn't be a Socs was us. The gang. Me and Soda. Darry was too smart to be a greaser." Darry being a greaser would be good for him. He would have an education and not have to worry about finding a job, but he also wouldn't have to gang and good friends practically brothers like he does being a greaser.

What does Pony mean on pg. 123 when he says, " we could get along without anyone, but Johnny."?

When Ponyboy says that "we could get along with anyone but Johnny." I think that he means that Johnny is the person that they can't live without. No of them. He keeps them together. Johnny needed them and they needed Johnny. They both needed eachother. Without Johnny the gang would be different, I wouldn't be the same without Johnny and Johnny wouldn't be the same without them. This is what I think they mean by anyone, but Johnny.

Why do the boys fight? Why is Pony different?

The boys fight for fun, pride, hatred and conformity. While Ponyboy doesn't know why he fights, mainly for self defense. "soda for fun, Steve hatred, Darry pride, and Two-Bit for conformity. Why do I fight? I thought, and couldnt't think of any good reason. There isn't any real good reason for fighting except self defense." Ponyboys reason is the best reason fighting is not the answer, it's not fun and it doesn't bring pride or get rid of hatred.Fighting solves nothing.

What is the difference between Tim Sheppard's gang and Ponyboy's? Explain how Pony feels this difference might give his group the upper hand?

The difference between Tim Sheppard's gand and Ponyboy's is that grwasers are used to fighting with their hands and maybe a knife while Sheppards fight with anything they can get their hands on. This would give the greasers an advantage because they are used to fighting with hands only and nothing else. This would be a good thing for greasers.

  5. Discussion Questions

On the bottom of pg. 133, when Pony asks what kind of a world it is, what comment is he making about how society judges people?
What do you think Johnny's last words to Pony mean?

When Ponyboy asks what kind of world it is, the comment he is making about how society judges people is that they practically judge a book by it's cover. People look at the outside of someone and look how they dress, and look. Therefore, if they look tough on the outside they think their tough on the outside while really they could be sweet, nice and caring on the inside, but juts like to dress tough. Also, someone could look sweet on the outside, but they could really be tough and mean on the inside. Society judges people on how they look or even their rep, but everyone dressses or acts that way for a reason. Don't judge a book by it's cover open it up and look at what it's really about. A book is like a person. Don't judge them by their apperance get to know what their really like behind their looks.

I think Johnny's last word to Ponyboy mean that he should stay just the way he is. The way he is is tough with the never giving up attitude. I think that this is what Johnny means when he says "Stay gold Ponyboy, stay gold..." For Ponyboy to keep being tough and to never give up even when things get rough. Johnny's last words to Ponyboy where very strong words that Ponyboy should remeber and listen to for as long as he lives.

  6. How does what the doctor first says, on page 119, forshadow Johhny's condition?

It forshadows Johnny's condition because he knows he isnt that strong and he might die. He says "he's been asking for them. It can't hurt now".

If Darry didn't have Soda and Pony, why would he be a soc?

    He would be rich.

What does Pony mean on pg. 123 when he says, " we could get along without anyone, but Johnny."?

Johnny is the groups pet, adn they love him.

Why do the boys fight? Why is Pony different?

They fight becausethey like to. Ponyboy doesn't though. He just wants to be in the gang, and if he doesn't fight, he wont be in the gang.

What is the difference between Tim Sheppard's gang and Ponyboy's? Explain how Pony feels this difference might give his group the upper hand?

Tim Sheppard's gang is different from Pony's because the greasers use hands while they use anything they can get.
